Are you a Mughal?

As I was browsing the internet, I came across an article that was published back in April in the Telegraph, about a trust being opened to bring back the remains of the last Mughal Emperor and for his descendants to be traced.

Dean Nelson writes:

'Calls for Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar's body to be returned to India and to be buried along with those of his royal ancestors have steadily grown since 2007's 150th anniversary of the Indian mutiny – when "sepoys" in British army regiments massacred their officers.

The rebellion was eventually put down with great brutality in a series of bloody battles and Bahadur Shah Zafar was sent into exile in Rangoon, Burma, where he died.

Although he has been described as the "Last Mughal", there have been numerous claims from alleged descendants that Zafar's lineage continues to this day. Now a powerful trust, including influential Muslim academics, businessmen and one of India's leading Urdu poets have joined forces to establish how many Mughals remain, and seek the return of the last emperor.

Professor Aslam Pervez, an historian of Zafar's reign and a founding member of the Mughal Trust, last night told The Daily Telegraph its main aim was not simply to reunite the remaining Mughal royals, but to bring back the last Mughal to Delhi.

"There is a move that we should bring back his last remains from Rangoon and make a grave for him here in Delhi, at Mehrauli, where his father and grandfather are buried.

"There are so many people who claim to be descended. The Mughals were scattered, many ran away from Delhi, to Hyderabad, after the mutiny and no-one knows who went where," he said.

Many are believed to have fled to Calcutta, where 70 descendants have been traced by the trust, and Aurangabad where a further 200 are believed to live. Others are believed to be living in Pakistan and Burma.'

I think it's a great idea but I'm unsure about the reasons of wanting to do this. Is it for historical purposes or just to find out who his descendants are so we can help them out? The article doesn't mention how the findings will be published so I'm not sure whether the public will be able to see this famous family tree. I imagine it's gonna be a difficult task of tracing descendants, perhaps they will be using new technology such as DNA.

Now I'm not claiming to be a desecendant here but my Dad is always telling us we are Meer Mughals so how does that fit in with this? I don't know but it's all very interesting.

What do you think about this? Do you have rumours of Mughal ancestry in your family?

Pakistan Intelligence Agencies & Police Department

1. FIA Saud Ahmed Mirza Director General (DG) Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)
Mirza joined the police on March 23, 1979 and is currently a grade 21 officer. He was made CID Additional IG (Sindh) on March 10, 2010. After his intermediate from Government College in 1971 and his bachelor’s from the same institution in 1975, he went on to do a master’s in public administration from Punjab University and another in police studies from the University of Exeter, UK.
Mirza has been commanding the CID police who have busted several terrorist networks, including those of locally banned outfits, the Taliban and al Qaeda, under his supervision.
Mirza is known to be a man of “integrity”, “impeccable character” and relatively more brain than brawn, said a top Sindh bureaucrat who knows Mirza and has worked with Mirza’s wife, a high-ranking tax commissioner. There is scepticism among the police that he will be able to tackle target killings given that this issue can only be resolved if the political parties display the will.

During his brief stint, the outgoing chief of the FIA investigated into some high profile cases. In Ogra Suo Motu Case No. I, Mirza completed inquiry against two former prime ministers Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and won applause from even the then Chief Justice Supreme Court Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. Mirza also formed a team of upright officers comprising additional, deputy and assistant directors that recorded statements of former dictator Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf and his aides in High Treason case and braved pressure from their colleagues in khakis. Investigation into Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) scam involving a huge amount of Rs40 billion is yet another important milestone in FIA history.According to sources, Saud Mirza had to face pressure from within his own department and also outside to delay investigation but he completed the investigation within ten days and arrested some high profile directors and officials of the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI). It also goes to his credit that under him, FIA conducted investigation into corruption of worth billions of rupees in Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and arrested its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abid Javed Akbar on Nov 21, 2013 in Karachi. Abid Javed was facing charges of his alleged involvement in approving fraudulent trade subsidies to several fake companies through fictitious claims and backdated cheques. It may be mentioned here the government had sent TDAP’s Rs1.3 billion corruption scam to FIA in August 2013 and FIA taking the challenge completed the investigation and made arrests within two months, the sources further said.Last, but not least is investigation and arrest of former Chairman CDA Farkhand Iqbal on charges of illegal auction of some key properties of the CDA. On April 10, 2013 in his message to his FIA team, Saud Mirza had said, “The FIA as an organization would strive to deliver the best services possible to the national and international community through a team of dedicated, professional and competent officials. We assure full adherence to our motto of ‘Commitment to combating organized crime’ in an efficient skilled and impartial manner.” Today the FIA chief is leaving after successfully accomplishing his mission, said a senior official of the agency. Mirza’s latest achievement was signing of an MoU with State Bank for jointly combating money laundering. It was signed on January 14 this year. Saud Mirza was recently promoted to grade 22. His wife, too, is a government officer of grade 22. According to FIA officials, the outgoing chief has set high standards of merit, transparency and impartiality and his successor will have to follow them or they can prove a double-edge sword for him.

13. DIG MANZUR MUGHAL - Now IB Director
A crisis of leadership for Karachi’s three important special investigative cells ended on Wednesday with the appointment of DIG Manzur Mughal as the chief of the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA).
Mughal has been transferred from his post as the director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
“It’s a good step because for a while we were working without a head,” said ACLC chief SSP Javed Akbar Riaz. “Mughal saheb is a senior, professional officer and understands things. Hopefully it will benefit us.”DIG Mughal’s The CIA is a very important department that needed a fulltime DIG and Manzur Mughal is the kind of DIG who gets involved in even the small things,” said SIU chief SSP Shahjahan Khan. “It’s not a joke to head the CIA. But with Mughal saheb’s arrival one of the biggest advantages is that an IB officer will lead it.”Mughal said that one of the first things he must accomplish is winning the trust of all the officers and personnel (of the three cells) working under him. Few can match his experience as he is an officer who has been through the grind and knows the system. Not only has he served twice at several posts, such as CIA SSP and DIG investigations, but he has also run the show in rural Sindh as the SSP of Larkana, Thatta and Sanghar. For some, however, there is a sense of relief that there is a permanent person to run the CIA. “Now we’ll have some real fun at work,” said a DSP there. “Tarar saheb had his own place and Mughal has his own place. But you wouldn’t be wrong if you wanted to say that Mughal is one of those police officers who’s been through the grind [manjha hua afsar he].”

I'm a Mughal and direct descendent of Emperor Shah Jahan through his eldest son Dara Shikoh. My family has a preserved family tree that goes all the way back to Amir Taimur. My name is Saalim Mirza.

My lineage going up to Emporer Shah Jahan is as follows: Saalim Mirza -> Mirza Humayun Bakht -> Mirza Eunus Beg -> Mirza Ibraheem Beg -> Mirza Ameer Beg -> Mirza Haider Beg -> Mirza Ilaahi Beg -> Mansoor Mirza -> Murad Mirza -> Sikandar Shikoh -> Sulayman Shikoh -> Dara Shikoh -> Emperor Shah Jahan.

I'm really interested in finding out other Mughal family trees and comparing them with mine in order to build a bigger picture of the Mughal family and find long-lost relatives.

Please contact me if you have access to any Mughal family tree.

Thanks

Are there any descendants of shah Shuja in India?
My elders have always said that we are Mughals. We use surnames like Mirza, Baig. My DNA says the same but I am really interested in finding my complete family ties to Mughals. My uncle says we are known as shujaan Khandan. I really don't know what that means. I feel maybe it has some connection with shah shuja. Is there anyone here with connections to Deccan button factory hyderabad? I have a shajara which was distributed by Deccan button factory owner, his name was Gaus-ud-din. Anyone ??

I don't know...I am an Indian..but my grandfather says that our ancestors were the scholars who came with the Mughals..

My father and forefathers bear the name Mughal with pride. I have been told by my grandparents (as they were told by there grandparents) we are descendants of the Mughal Empire of India. A lot of information has been lost over the time and Mughals are scattered globally to many extents. We are a large Mughal family in UK and our family has moved to many of the other continents.
I have in the past searched for some information about migration of Mughals in the early days and beyond but have not been able to find anything specific from records, resources etc ... However, we are here and going strong. I would love to know more about our history. Any references would be much appreciated.

Has anyone tested their DNA. I have, and find a few Turkish and Caucus origin match’s from 7 generations + back. I’m wondering did the Mughals flee to the Ottoman Empire to explain the presence in my DNA.I know that they did marry up until the end of Ottoman Empire.
I’m on GEDmatch H738227. Looking for a link to the Mughals.

I think all of mughal, Turk, Arabic and Iranian ancestry in Pakistan and India are fake.
Their ancestor when converted to Islam are trying to make connection with foreign invaders and hate their Hindu ancestry. If someone will undergo to DNA test, every thing will be reveal to them and their pride of race will be shattered.
The current thinking in Pakistani Muslims is that Arabs, moghal, Iranian are racially superior to Muslims Pakistan and so having foreign genes or an invader bloodline makes them higher in status than Indian origin. But more important is the thought that central Asian invader are Muslims, and that bestows moral superiority on them over the kafir or Muslim Indian.

I am Muhammad Yasir Rouf Mirza. I also belong to a Mughal family and our village is in Chakwal. We are also known as the 'Kaks of Lehr Sultanpur' the village where our immediate ancestors settled perhaps to escape persecution. The survey of local tribes in the Potohar region taken during the British at the beginning of the previous century rule also mentions the 'kaks of Lehr Sultanpur' who wields some historical significance...
Anybody who is from the above-mentioned area and explains the reason behind the word 'Kaks'?
